How to choose a label printer?

The right device starts with what you mark, where and how much – not with the price tag.

Six questions before you buy

1. What do you mark?

Wires, cables, terminal blocks, cabinets or equipment. The application decides whether you need heat-shrink sleeves, label tape, tags or several materials from one device.

2. Where do you print?

On site you need a portable, battery-powered device. In panel building and maintenance workshops, a desktop printer speeds up batch work.

3. How much do you print?

A few markers a week allows a simple device. Hundreds or thousands per project require speed, large rolls and automatic cutting.

4. Where does the data come from?

If markers originate in design software (e.g. Excel, EPLAN), choose software that imports data directly. Manual typing is slow and error-prone.

5. Will the marker last?

Check heat, chemical and UV resistance and print permanence. Thermal transfer printing withstands abrasion better than direct thermal.

6. What does a marker cost in use?

The total includes the device, materials and labour. Labour time is very often the largest cost in marking. An inexpensive device and/or materials do not guarantee cost-efficiency, as these are often fully manual setups.

Portable or desktop printer?

Many need both: a desktop printer for batches and a portable one for field fixes.

The most common selection mistakes

  • Choosing by purchase price and forgetting material costs.
  • Not checking that the required materials and widths are available.
  • Software that doesn't support existing design files, so everything is retyped.
  • Not testing marker durability in real conditions.
